Air Fryer Recipes for Beginners

If you are new to an air fryer, start with frozen fries, salmon, or a plain chicken breast. Frozen fries are 400°F for 15–18 minutes and hard to ruin if you do not overfill the basket. Salmon is 400°F for 7–9 minutes with no flip. A chicken breast is 375°F for 18–22 minutes and needs a thermometer. The recipes below are the ones marked as reasonable first cooks.

Three habits that matter more than the recipe

Preheat for two or three minutes. Cook in one layer. Pull meat and fish by internal temperature: 165°F (74°C) for chicken, 145°F (63°C) for fish and pork. Those three habits fix more first batches than a new spice blend does.

Skip the whole chicken and the breaded fried chicken until you have done a breast or wings once. They are good recipes. They are worse first recipes because basket height and a coating add failure modes you do not need on day one.

Questions

What should a beginner cook in an air fryer first?

Frozen french fries, a salmon fillet, or a boneless chicken breast. They have short ingredient lists. Keep the basket in a single layer and use a thermometer for the meat and the fish.

Do beginners need to preheat an air fryer?

Yes for these recipes, two or three minutes. Skipping it is the usual reason a first batch of fries or salmon looks pale and takes longer than the recipe said.
