Air Fryer Frozen French Fries
Frozen french fries go into a preheated air fryer at 400°F (200°C) for 15–18 minutes, shaken every 5 minutes, straight from the bag. Do not thaw them and do not add oil unless the bag looks dry. A pound serves two as a side. This page is the frozen-fry method. Homemade fries cut from potatoes are a different recipe, with a soak and a lower starting temperature. The fries hub compares the two.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450 g) frozen french fries, straight from the freezer
- A pinch of fine salt, about ¼ tsp, added after cooking
Estimated nutrition
Per serving, estimated: 340 kcal, 5 g protein, 54 g carbs,11 g fat, 5 g fiber, 1020 mg sodium.
Estimated per serving from typical USDA FoodData Central values for the amounts listed, then rounded. Not a laboratory analysis. A full pound of par-fried frozen fries, divided by 2, plus ¼ tsp salt after cooking. No added oil. Brands differ in fat and sodium. Read the bag if you need a label for a specific product. This estimate uses a typical par-fried fry.
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 2–3 minutes. A cold start leaves the center floury while the tips dry out.
- Add the frozen fries in one layer. If you cannot see basket through the fries, you have too many. Cook a second batch. A pound is often two rounds in a basket under 6 qt, or one generous round in a 6 qt if you shake often.
- Air fry 15–18 minutes. Shake or turn at 5 and 10 minutes so the fries on the edge trade places with the fries in the middle. Season with the salt the moment they come out, while the surface is still dry enough for salt to stick.
- Thick steak fries and crinkle cuts usually need the 18-minute end, sometimes 20. Shoestring cuts can be done at 12–14. Look for a deep gold edge and a soft center when you break one, not a uniform tan.
Basket size and model notes
Basket fryers brown frozen fries faster than oven-style machines. If you are on a toaster-oven style, start at the same 400°F and plan on the long end of the range, with a tray rotate instead of a shake.
Do not cook fries in a drawer that is also cooking something wet, like a sauced protein. Steam from the other drawer, on some dual-zone models, softens the side facing the divider.
Follow the bag only as a second opinion. Many bags print an oven time. The air fryer is shorter. If the bag prints an air fryer time, treat it as a hint and still shake on the 5-minute rhythm.
Tips
- Ice crystals steam the batch. If the bag has heavy frost, shake it off in the basket for a few seconds before you start the timer, and do not rinse the fries.
- Oil spray is optional. Most frozen fries are already par-fried. Extra oil makes them taste like the freezer and slows browning.
- Salt after, not before. Salt on a frozen fry draws moisture out and then burns in spots.
Substitutions
- Straight-cut fries. Frozen waffle fries or potato wedges at 400°F. Waffles are often done in 12–15 minutes. Thick wedges can take 20. Same rule: one layer, shake, judge by color.
- Salt. A pinch of garlic powder or paprika after cooking. Add cheese only in the last minute, or it melts through the basket.
- Frozen fries. The homemade french fry recipe if you have raw potatoes and 15 minutes to soak them. Do not run raw potato on this frozen clock. It will be leathery outside and raw in the middle.
Storage and reheating
Frozen fries are meant to be cooked from frozen once. Cooked leftovers keep in the fridge up to 2 days and will not be the same. Do not refreeze a thawed or cooked portion of the bag. Keep the uncooked bag sealed in the freezer and cook what you need.
Reheat leftover fries at 375°F (190°C) for 3–4 minutes in a single layer. They will be drier than the first cook. A microwave makes them tough. If they were soggy when stored, reheating will not restore the original crust.
Questions
How long do you cook frozen french fries in an air fryer?
15–18 minutes at 400°F (200°C), shaken every 5 minutes, from frozen. Shoestrings can finish closer to 12–14. Thick steak fries may need 20. No thawing step.
Do you put oil on frozen fries in the air fryer?
Usually no. They are already par-fried. Add a light spray only if the particular brand comes out dry and pale after a full 18 minutes in a single layer.
Why are my air fryer frozen fries soggy?
The basket was too full, they were thawed first, or they sat in a closed container after cooking. One layer and a shake fix the cook. Eat them when they come out if you want them crisp.
