Do Air Fryer Recipes Work in Any Air Fryer?
Yes, with small adjustments. Temperature transfers directly between machines, because 400°F is 400°F in any of them. Time is what shifts, usually by one or two minutes rather than ten. Basket size, wattage, and whether the machine is a basket or an oven-style unit account for nearly all of the difference.
Temperature transfers, timing does not quite
A recipe that says 400°F is describing the air around the food, and every air fryer with a working thermostat delivers that. What differs is how fast the machine gets there and how hard the fan pushes, which changes how quickly the surface browns.
The practical effect is small. A recipe tested on a 1700W basket model will be within about two minutes on most other machines. Check a few minutes early on the first attempt and you will never be caught out.
What actually differs between models
| Type | Effect on a recipe |
|---|---|
| Basket, 3–4 qt | Cooks slightly faster. Halve batches so food stays in one layer. |
| Basket, 5–6 qt | The size most recipes are written for. Use times as published. |
| Dual drawer | Each drawer behaves like a small basket. Add a minute when both are full. |
| Oven-style / toaster hybrid | Weaker airflow. Add 2–4 minutes and rotate the tray halfway. |
| Under 1400W | Slower to preheat and to brown. Add 2–3 minutes. |
Adjusting for your machine
Three checks turn any published recipe into one that fits your air fryer.
- Preheat for two to three minutes so the first minute of cooking is not spent warming up.
- Load a single layer. If the recipe fills your basket more than that, cook it in two rounds rather than adding time.
- Check at 75% of the stated time. Whatever you find there tells you the offset for your machine, and it stays the same across recipes.
Notes by brand
- Ninja. The AF100, dual-zone AF300 and AF400, and Foodi models all take the same recipes. Dual-zone drawers run slightly hotter than the single basket, so start checking a minute early.
- Cosori. Times as published on the 5.8 qt. On the 4 qt compact, take one to two minutes off.
- Instant Vortex. Close to Cosori timings. The oven-style Vortex Plus needs the tray rotated halfway.
- Philips. Older Airfryer models run at lower wattage. Add two to three minutes and preheat properly.
- Tefal ActiFry. The paddle-stirred models are a different machine. Skip the shake steps and reduce oil, since the paddle keeps food moving.
The number that never changes
Internal temperature is the one figure that is identical on every machine: 165°F (74°C) for chicken, 145°F (63°C) for fish and pork. When a recipe and your air fryer disagree about time, the thermometer settles it. The cooking times chart lists the safe temperature alongside every meat and fish entry.
Questions people also ask
Do I need the manufacturer app for my air fryer?
Only for Wi-Fi models where you want to start the machine from your phone, such as Cosori with VeSync. A recipe app is a separate thing, and it works with any air fryer regardless of brand.
Why does my food take longer than the recipe says?
Usually an overcrowded basket or a skipped preheat. After those, wattage is the next suspect: a machine under 1400W runs two to three minutes behind one at 1700W.
