Air Fryer Whole Chicken

A 4 lb (1.8 kg) whole chicken takes 55–60 minutes in the air fryer at 360°F (180°C). Start it breast-side down, flip at 30 minutes, and stop when the thickest thigh reads 165°F (74°C), not when the skin looks brown. Rest 10 minutes before carving. The lower temperature is deliberate: a whole bird at 400°F burns the breast before the thigh is safe. This is the roast-chicken page. Wings, breast, and breaded fried chicken are separate recipes.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken, about 4 lb (1.8 kg), giblets removed
  • 2 tbsp (27 g) olive oil
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Estimated nutrition

Per serving, estimated: 600 kcal, 46 g protein, 0 g carbs,44 g fat, 0 g fiber, 770 mg sodium.

Estimated per serving from typical USDA FoodData Central values for the amounts listed, then rounded. Not a laboratory analysis. Edible meat and skin are estimated at 55% of a 4 lb raw bird (about 998 g). Bones are excluded. Oil is the full 2 tbsp on the skin. A serving is a quarter of that edible portion, skin included, which is why the estimate is higher than a skinless breast.

Instructions

  1. Pat the chicken dry, including the cavity. Rub the oil and the paprika, garlic powder, 1 tsp salt, and pepper over the skin and a little inside the cavity. Tuck the wing tips under the shoulders so they do not sit in the fan and char.
  2. Preheat to 360°F (180°C). Put the chicken breast-side down. If your basket has a low ceiling, a 4 lb bird is the practical maximum. A larger bird belongs in the oven.
  3. Air fry 30 minutes breast-side down. Flip breast-side up — tongs under the cavity, not through the breast — and cook another 25–30 minutes.
  4. Check the thigh at the thickest point, not touching bone, and the breast as a second reading. Both need to be at least 165°F (74°C). The breast is often done first. If the breast is racing past 165 while the thigh is behind, tent the breast loosely with a small piece of foil weighed down by the bird and keep going.
  5. Rest 10 minutes before carving. The skin stays crisper if you rest it on a rack or an upside-down plate instead of in a puddle of juice.

Basket size and model notes

Basket height matters more than width. If the breast touches the heating element when the bird is breast-side up, the chicken is too tall for that machine. Press it slightly flatter or cook it in the oven. Do not run the fryer with food against the element.

A 3 lb bird is closer to 45–50 minutes total at the same temperature. A 5 lb bird often will not fit, and if it does it needs more time than a simple scale-up. The thigh temperature is the only reliable end point.

Oven-style air fryers that look like toaster ovens should rotate the bird at the flip and may need the full hour plus 5 minutes. The fan is less direct than a drawer basket.

Tips

  • Starting breast-side down renders some of the back fat over the breast and keeps the white meat from drying during the longer thigh cook.
  • Dry brine overnight if you can: salt the skin, leave the chicken uncovered in the fridge, and oil it just before cooking. The skin dries and browns harder. Same temperature and a similar clock.
  • Do not stuff the cavity with absorbent bread. It blocks heat and the stuffing may not reach a safe temperature when the thigh does. A few herb stems or a halved onion are enough.

Substitutions

  • Paprika and garlic. A spoon of softened butter under the skin instead of some of the oil, plus salt and pepper only. Butter browns faster, so watch the breast after the flip.
  • Whole chicken. A spatchcocked bird if your basket is wide and short. It cooks closer to 40 minutes at 375°F because the thighs are exposed. Still confirm 165°F.
  • Olive oil. Any neutral oil. A heavy sugar-based barbecue sauce goes on in the last 5 minutes only.

Storage and reheating

Carve, then refrigerate the meat within 2 hours. Keep skin-on pieces in a shallow container up to 3 days. Strip remaining meat off the carcass the same day rather than storing a whole cold bird, which cools too slowly. Freeze sliced meat up to 2 months. The carcass makes stock, but that is a stovetop job, not an air fryer one.

Reheat pieces at 350°F (177°C) for 5–8 minutes until hot, skin side up. Breast meat reheats worse than thigh. If the breast is already dry, use it cold or chopped into a salad instead of blasting it again. Confirm leftovers are steaming hot in the center.

Questions

How long does a whole chicken take in the air fryer?

A 4 lb chicken takes 55–60 minutes at 360°F (180°C), flipped from breast-side down to breast-side up at 30 minutes. It is done when the thigh is 165°F (74°C). Rest 10 minutes.

What size chicken fits in an air fryer?

About 4 lb in a standard 5–6 qt basket, and only if the breast does not touch the element. Larger birds and small baskets are a bad pair. Check the height before you preheat.

Why start the chicken breast-side down?

The breast finishes faster than the thigh. Giving the back and thighs the first, more intense contact keeps the breast from overshooting while you wait on the dark meat.
